Explain the processes involved in fMRI.

Cognitive processes use energy - this production of energy uses oxygen from haemoglobin (blood). Oxygenated blood - doesn't distort surrounding magnetic field. Deoxygenated blood - distorts surrounding magnetic field. Blood vessels are more visible as blood oxygen decreases.
