Manifest Destiny

The idea that the American people were destined to settle the continent west to the Pacific Ocean. Westward expansion brought its own set of issues, particularly regarding the spread of slavery. Improvements in transportation helped support the movement of people and goods between east and west, north and south, and points in between.
