Bronchopulmonary dysplasia is a chronic pulmonary disorder that develops in permature infants. Chronic lung changes include thickening and necrosis of alveolar walls with impairment of oxygen, diffusion from the alveoli to the capillaries. edema and inflammation of the capillary bed can cause some alveoli to collapse, some to hyperinflate and other to rupture. S/S: respiratory distress ( wheezing, retracting, nasal flaring, irritability, abundant secretions and cyanosis when stressed)
