Types of layout
- Used for craft based industries with large products - e.g. ship building, aircraft assembly, heavy machinery, specialist cars - Difficult to automate even in industries that use it
Fixed position
- Used for jobbing manufacture and batch manufacture - Most versatile type of manufacture - Suites frequently changing product - e.g. factories that manufacture machined metal components

- Used for high volume/mass production e.g. cars and consumer products

- machinery are arranged in the most common order, rather than grouped together by type as in the process layout - typically used in cellular manufacturing where different products have similar parts
